Conference Schedule 9:30 a.m. Opening Remarks 9:40 a.m. 'The Palestine-Israel Conflict: A Legacy of Ethnic Cleansing and Dispossession' Speaker: Dr. Ismail Zayid Dr. Zayid will present a historical overview of the dispossession of the lands of the Palestinian people as the basis of the founding of Israel. This panel is essential for anyone looking for information on the history of the conflict from the beginning to the recent period. Dr. Zayid will address the ways in which the Zionist state continues to exercise policies of ethnic cleansing in the current Palestine-Israel conflict. 10:45 a.m. 'Facts on the Ground: Cemented Aggressions and Violations' Speakers: Jon Elmer (photo-journalist) & Khaled Mouammar (President of the Canadian Arab Federation) A presentation of the current crisis facing the Palestinian people. Jon Elmer will discuss the everyday livelihood of the Palestinian people in a powerful photo presentation, while Khaled Mouammar will focus on the often forgotten Palestinian-Christian minority population on both sides of the Green Line. This panel will allow participants to have a more thorough understanding of the current situation on the ground in Palestine. 12:00 p.m. 'Palestine and the War on Terror: Safety Net or Excuse for Escalation?' Speakers: Wahida Valiente (VP of the Canadian Islamic Congress) & Dr. Yaser Haddara (McMaster University) A presentation about the way the USA-led Global War on Terror has exploited the conflict in Palestine as a means to further their foreign policies within the Middle East. This panel will provide a broader, international context for the Palestinian struggle. 1:00 p.m. LUNCH Enjoy traditional Palestinian cuisine to the background of both classic and original poetry read by McMaster SPHR members and mothers. 2:00 p.m. 'The Right of Return: A Basic Right Still Denied' Speaker: Rafeef Ziadah (Summoud Toronto) Rafeef Ziadah will address the significance of "The Right of Return" as an issue of human rights and international law and why it must also be applied to the Palestinian refugees. 3:15 p.m. 'Canadian Foreign Policy in Palestine and the Movement to Divest from the Israeli State' Speakers: Hanna Kawas (Canada Palestine Association Vancouver) & Adam Hanieh, Nadia Daar (Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid Toronto) Hanna Kawas will discuss the detrimental effects of Canadian foreign policy on the ability of Palestinians to gain a livelihood. Adam Hanieh and Nadia Daar will discuss the current movement within Canada to Boycott, Divest and Sanction the Israeli Apartheid state. 5:00 p.m. 'An Attack on Us All: Repression Against Palestine Solidarity Organizing' Speakers: Dr. David Noble (York University) & LaithnMarouf (SPHR National Montreal) Speakers will address the organized movement aimed at repressing those actively working to support the Palestinian people. 6:00 p.m. Closing Remarks |
