March 17 Day of Action Against War and Occupation
Canada, Out of Afghanistan! Not a Single Youth for the Armies of Aggression and Annexation! March 17 Pan-Canadian Day of Action Troops Out of Afghanistan and Iraq! Read the call for the Day of Action http://www.shunpiking.com For listing of events: http://www.acp-cpa.ca/en/M172007Events.htm THE federal National Defence Ministry is turning truth on its head in its propaganda efforts to entice the youth to join its army of aggression and annexation. It posted two new videos on October 6, 2006, both of which are also used as "advertisements" in another of the sordid activities of Canada's "new government." The Ministry website videos open with "Fight with the Canadian Forces! Join us!" Then over a background of war planes, ships and tanks, emerge the slogans: "Fight Fear!" "Fight Distress!" "Fight Chaos!" In a window filled with dust thrown up by an armoured tank, the slogan "Fight with the Canadian Forces! Join Us!" appears once again. This same window opens on a multimedia gallery, which invites visitors to "Watch the latest publicity video for the Canadian Forces." These two videos are each 90 seconds long. The first, entitled "Afghanistan," has French text. The second one, in English, is called "Disaster Relief." The two videos use the same calls - "Fight fear!" "Fight Distress!" and "Fight Chaos" - in two very different contexts. The first video is about the aggression and annexation of Afghanistan by the NATO forces under US imperialist command. The second features interventions by the Canadian army in battle to master the forces of nature as they rescue people affected by forest fires, floods and other natural calamities in Canada. "Join us!" it concludes. The video on Afghanistan is the one that has been the most widely featured on TV. Over background sounds of war drums and horror movie music, we see warplanes flying first over the Rocky Mountains, British Columbia, the Pacific Ocean and then the Gulf of Oman. The text points out that they are heading towards Afghanistan. Young soldiers are parachuted into the country, as Canadian warships speed over the waters of the Gulf of Oman on their way to the region, with their cargo of troops for aggression and occupation. These are followed by shots of fully armed foreign soldiers - Canadian troops - invading the towns of the Afghan people. They break into homes, smashing unlocked doors and terrorizing families - men, women and children - forcing them to remain silent and to cooperate. The invaders carry on with their assault, in the end blowing up a house, as the slogan "Fight Fear!" appears on the screen. The truth is that fear can be fought only by fighting the warmongers who are assaulting and annexing Afghanistan and leaving destruction, desolation and terror in their wake. The video cuts to Canadian soldiers attending to the wounded, who appear to be members of the Canadian army. Soldiers then seize a small boat full of people who seem to be trying to escape the aggression. At this moment the slogan " Fight Distress!" appears. The video makes no mention of the thousands of people who have been killed, and says nothing of the three million people who have taken refuge in neighbouring countries or those who have been displaced within Afghanistan itself. There is a total disregard for the homes and for the infrastructure so badly needed by the people. The video carries on with scenes of destruction - homes, hospitals, schools and industrial plants. Foreign soldiers stand on these ruins, while tanks patrol the streets. In the midst of the chaos of this war of aggression, stands an Afghan woman holding a picture. She might be a wife, a mother, a sister; the picture is that of a [murdered] husband, son or brother. She points this picture at these foreign invaders, the source of her suffering and her anger. At this moment, the federal National Defence Ministry's slogan appears "Fight Chaos! Fight With the Canadian Forces! Join Us!" accompanied by the beat of war drums. The youth are being called upon to join an army that is waging a war that is unjust and illegal according to international law and immoral in every way. The warmongers are the US-led NATO reactionary forces and the US imperialist empire builders on whose side Canada is fighting. It is they who are distressed by the brave resistance of the Afghan people, which is inflicting blow after blow on the invaders and is bound to prevail over the schemes of the empire-builders. The working class and people, the women and youth, the democratic and progressive forces oppose in their immense majority the wars of aggression and annexation of the empire builders. They are fighting to force Canada to fall in line with the authority that comes from the will and the values of the Canadian people. They are demanding that Canada immediately withdraw its troops from these unjust wars, stop endangering the peace and make reparations to the victimized peoples, without conditions. The forces that are fighting for freedom, for the peoples' right to be and their right to self-determination and peace are today joining the movement for an anti-war government in Canada and the same for all countries of the world. This is the way to fight the chaos engendered by the wars of aggression and annexation of the empire builders. No to the war propaganda of the empire builders! Demand enlightened statecraft! Join the movement to build an antiwar government! All out for the demonstrations on March 17 against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan! Canada, out of Afghanistan! Canada, out of NATO, NORAD and any military pact with US imperialism! Not a Single Youth for Imperialist War! -- |
