DISCOVERING WINTER
Cold day chasing birds in the Valley Photo essay
Hi! I went to the Wolfville area yesterday to see if I could get some Eagle shots. I should have stayed home:-) The weather was raw and around those areas of the Grand Pre Dykelands, Canning and Sheffield Mills there were whiteouts and a few places on the roads where you had to plow through the snow it was so deep. Most of the birds were laying low and hiding from the strong bitter winds. This eagle showed itself briefly flying over a farm and was at quite a distance so I couldn't get the kind of shot I wanted but at least we saw it. Nice Immature bird. The Robin popped up briefly from its hiding place when I whistled. We heard some Cardinals but they stayed buried. Saw a lot of chickadees in flocks and some Horned larks picking at the gravel. Boy they are tuff birds. Wow was it cold in the wind! The farmers field was filled with Crows and DUCKS...yes...ducks! There was also one Red tailed hawk sitting in the field with them. I shot the field scene from inside the car and moved good and close for a close-up but when I got out and was setting up with the big lens (on the opposite side to the birds) a car drove by and put most of the birds up. The Redtail flew to the edge of the woods about 500 metres from the car where he parked with a few buddies. Way too far to get some good clear shots but nice to see. It always amazes me to see how the birds cope with the cold and the snow. Amazing creatures! Enjoy! Mike
