International community overwhelmingly condemns U.S. economic, financial and commercial blockade against Cuba NEW YORK (9 November 2006) RHC -- THE UN General Assembly has once again overwhelmingly voted in favor of Cuba's resolution on the "Need to End the Economic, Financial and Commercial Blockade of the United States of America against Cuba." With a vote of 183 in favor of the Cuban resolution, four against and one abstention, the number of votes condemning Washington's blockade continues to grow. After Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque presented the island's resolution, he added that the U.S. has always pressured other nations not to vote in favor of the island's document. But, said the Cuban diplomat, for the first time since the document was voted on in 1992, a nation has presented an amendment to the island's text. This time, an Australian representative presented a U.S.-backed amendment to the Cuban resolution, which demands the island end alleged human rights violations. The amendment was crushed by the vast majority of the UN member nations. This is the 15th consecutive year that the United Nations approved the resolution condemning Washington's blockade and its extraterritorial nature that not only affects the island but third nations also attempting to trade with the Caribbean island.
