OIL & GAS TESTING: THE PEOPLE'S OPPOSITION TO THE PLUNDER OF THE GULF OF ST.
LAWRENCE
After a four-year battle, Cape Breton Island joined the Deep South of the United States and several Third World countries when the federal and provincial Nova Scotia government on November 28, 2003 opened the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence to become one of the few places on the globe where oil and gas exploration is allowed close to shore. The waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, technically an inland sea of Canada, and one of the largest inland seas in the world, are being occupied by American oil companies who consider it international waters. A very dangerous potential exists to silently annex the entire St. Lawrence Basin to the continental United States, from the open Atlantic through the St. Lawrence Seaway more than 1,000 miles inland to the Great Lakes. The decision by the Canada Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB) has sparked open outrage, ongoing demonstrations and court challenges from Nova Scotian fishermen's unions, the Mi'kmaq First Nations, environmentalists, scientists, priests and residents of Inverness and Antigonish counties.
