Dr Hakim Adi, Reader in the History of Africa and the African Diaspora at Middlesex University, London, UK, shows that the black communities have a very long history in Britain even going beyond Roman times. This book is highly recommended for a lively and concise presentation of the history of the African and Caribbean communities in Britain. Amongst the remarkable African and Caribbean personalities featured in this book are Vivian Florent who lost his life in the second world war; the Roman emperor Septimus Severus 3rd century AD who died in York in 211 AD; Charlotte Gardener who was hanged along with others for her part in the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots (named after Lord George Gordon, a powerful and extreme Protestant) in June, 1780 when a crowd some 60,000 strong marched to the House of Commons to present a petition for the repeal of the Catholic Relief Act and close to 500 people were killed or wounded before the riot was stopped; and Daniel Tull, a professional footballer with Tottenham Hotspur (1888-1918). The book includes an impressive collection of rare colour and black and white photos and illustrations, some of which depict black people in Britain as far back as 1511. Dr Adi is a founder member and currently chairs the Black and Asian Studies Association, and a member of the Mayor of London's Commission on African and Asian Heritage. Hakim Adi is the author of West Africans in Britain 1900-60: Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and Communism (Lawrence and Wishart, 1998) and (with M. Sherwood) The 1945 Manchester Pan-African Congress Revisited (New Beacon, 1995) and Pan-African History: Political Figures from Africa and the Diaspora since 1787 (Routledge, 2003). He has appeared in several television documentaries and radio programs, and has written widely on the history of the African Diaspora and Africans in Britain, including three history books for children.
